Good news for book lovers. Daryaganj’s Sunday book market that was shut following Delhi High Court’s order has got a fresh lease of life after getting a new address at the Mahila Haat ground opposite Broadway Hotel in Chandni Chowk, according to a report in The Indian Express.

A month back, Delhi High Court had directed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to close down the iconic book market in Netaji Subhash Marg as it hindered vehicular and pedestrian movement.

The closure had put the employment of around 276 book vendors in jeopardy, who then wrote a letter to the district commissioner requesting them to provide a new place to run the market. Thankfully, for them, their request has been taken under consideration and they have got permission to repen the market at Mahila Haat at Rs 170 per week.

“We received confirmation Thursday and will be setting up the market in Mahila Haat from Sunday. This place was not given for rent till now, but has been allotted to us. Officers from the commissioner’s office visited the location and allowed us to reopen the market,” Qamar Sayeed, president of the Sunday Book Bazaar Patri Welfare Association, told The Indian Express.

The vendors were given five options for running the market–Hanuman Mandir (Yamuna Bazaar), Kachha Bagh, Mata Sundri Road, Ramlila Maidan and Mahila Haat.
