Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli Chandel has slammed Saand Ki Aankh makers for casting young heroines (Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu) for portraying octogenerians Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar and not casting veteran actresses for the role. In a series of tweets, Rangoli said the better choice would have been actresses like Ramya Krishnan and Neena Gupta.

Saand Ki Aankh, produced by Anurag Kashyap and directed by debutant Tushar Hiranandani, is based on the life of oldest sharpshooters Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar from Johri village in Uttar Pradesh who took up the sport post 60 and went on to win many national championships, breaking all stereotypes of age and gender. While Bhumi Pednekar will be seen as Chandro Tomar, Taapsee Pannu will portray Prakashi Tomar.

Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli Chandel took a sharp jibe at the casting in a series of tweets and revealed that her sister Kangana Ranaut was earlier offered the role but she rejected it saying the role should be played by a senior actress.

Rangoli replied on the thread of a Twitter user who said the “movie followed the same stereotypes the women fought against as the actresses cast for the roles are too young to play them.” The Twitter user further said while male actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor got ample opportunities to play their age on screen, the same is not the case with their women contemporaries.

Replying to the thread, Rangoli said “Vikas Bahl and the director of this movie wanted Kangana to do this film, she clearly told them to cast older woman and fight agism and sexism in Bollywood.”

“Even today Kangana feel Ramya Krishnan and Neena Gupta ji would have been a far better option, and they have a great market value, why can’t they be mainstream actresses ?? When I call these people sasta …. .I am not talking about creative poverty or lack of aesthetics which is at full display, it’s the lack of value system and cheap ways of making money out of feminism by doing anti femininity stuff … very sad,” she added.

Neena Gupta who got accolades for her stellar performance in Badhaai Ho Badhaai also joined the conversation and agreed with Rangoli. “Yes, I was just thinking about this hamari umar ke role to kamsekam humse kara lo bhai.”

As for the debutant director Tushar, he decided to make the film on the inspirational women after watching their story on Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate. The film took five years to complete but going by the response to the trailer (released on September 23) the effort was worth it.
