Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who’s all set to turn 77 next month on October 11, has been chosen for India’s highest award in cinema Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, announced the actor’s name on Tuesday for the prestigious award, praising him for his stellar work.
“The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for 2 generations has been selected unanimously for #DadaSahabPhalke award. The entire country and international community is happy. My heartiest Congratulations to him. @narendramodi @SrBachchan,” he wrote.

What is Dadasaheb Phalke Awards
Dadasaheb Phalke Awards is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is honoured for their “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema” and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani.

Before Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Amitabh Bachchan has received Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
Amitabh Bachchan’s illustrious career
In a career spanning more than four decades, Amitabh Bachchan has added hundreds of films in his body of work. Amitabh Bachchan started his career in Indian film industry as a narraator in Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome. He made his acting debut with Saath Hindustani.
Many phases of Amitabh Bachchan’s career
After delivering a spate of flops, Big B’s role in Zanjeer made him an overnight star and also earned him his first Filmfare award for Best actor. He later continued to ride on a success wave with films like Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Kala Patthar, Shakti which saw him in his angry young man avatar.
He followed it up with more hits working in double shifts day and night in films like Kabhie Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Trishul, Don, Kasme Vaade, Ganga Ki Saugandh , Besharam, Suhaag, Mr. Natwarlal, Kaala Patthar, The Great Gambler and Manzil.
Late 80s to 90s was not a good phase in Big B’s career wherein he delivered flops and his production house suffered massive losses.
Amitabh redeemed himself from 2000 onwards after a makeover and strategy change and shone in films like Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Major Saab, Aks, Aankhein, Bade Miyaan Chhote Miyaan, Black, Paa, Piku, Sarkar, Pink. He continues to find challenging roles in films like Gulabo Sitabo.

Amitabh Bachchan has won national award four times and got three of the four honours in his second innings where he got the opportunity to portray more diverse roles. He won the national award for Agneepath, Black, Paa and Piku.
