Mumbai: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a unique art exhibition celebrating Gandhi and Khadi has been organised at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Titled Santati – Mahatma Gandhi Then. Now. Next, the exhibition features ten unique installations showcasing work of multidisciplinary artists from weaving, fashion, literature, fine arts and design industries who have interpreted Mahatma Gandhi in their own way, through the theme of Khadi.

The exhibition conceptualised by Lavina Baldota of the Abheraj Baldota Foundation was inaugurated by Sadhguru on Tuesday who also unveiled the new stamp which showcases 150 years of Gandhi, hand woven by textile designer Gaurang Shah and his team.  Also present at the inauguration were Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Juhi Chawla, Harsh Goenka and Sangita Jindal.

The idea of the exhibition came about when Lavina Baldota whose family has a strong Gandhian connection, met textile designer Gaurang Shah three years back and decided to collaborate on a project that involved recreation of Raja Ravi Verma’s paintings on khadi saris.

As they worked on the project together, they decided to connect with more artists who have been inspired by Mahatma Gandhi to interpret him in their own way, and that’s how the exhibition was born.

Architect Ashiesh Shah, Couturier Jean-Francoise Lesange of Vastrakala, Poet Navkirat Sodhi, Kishore Jhunjhunwala are some of the people associated with the exhibition. Each participating artist has interpreted khadi and Gandhi in their own way.

The exhibition is open to public from 3rd October till 15th November 2019 at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai
