New Delhi: Bollywood as well as digital space are evolving and coming out with unconventional love stories that were waiting to be told.
Post the Supreme Court verdict decriminalising homosexuality, the time is ripe to normalise same sex relationship through cinema and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan seems to be an attempt in the direction.
Post the success of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan that dealt with the subject of erectile dysfunction, the movie’s sequel tells the story of Kartik and Aman who fall in love with each other.
The movie’s trailer opens with a man asking Ayushmann Khurrana’s character Kartik when did he decide to become a gay. He counters with–just when you decided not to become a gay.
As the trailer moves forward, Kartik is seen falling in love with Aman, who comes from, ahem, a conservative family. He encourages him to talk to his parents as they seemed to be open-minded.
When Aman talks to his parents (played by Badhaai Ho Badhaai couple Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta) they are scandalised to say the least. As Neena Gupta says, “Supreme Court jin patakhon par behes kar rahi hai na wo apne aangan mein phoot rahe hain.”
When they do not agree, Kartik takes the Munnabhai route as he literally announces from the rooftops that Aman’s father is suffering from a incurable disease–homophobia.
Unable to convince their son that he cannot go ahead with his relationship with Kartik, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta fix his wedding with, well, a girl Kusum (Pankhury Awasthi) and so far it looks like the modern version of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge with a homosexual twist.
Aman cannot say no to his parents being a dutiful son but Kartik reminds him that he cannot expect to live happily ever after with Kusum after his pheras and from suhaag raat onwards, his life would be like reality show Roadies.
Soon, Neena Gupta realises they are spoiling the life of their kid (like Farida Jalal got convinced about Raj being the right match for Simran) and tries to reason with her husband but to no avail. “Haan, main banungi Mother India, Maa ke paas dil hota hai,” says Neena Gupta.
“Haan, pita to battery se chalte hain,” says Gajraj, unconvinced. Oh yes, Kartik gets beaten up by sticks much like Raj, but in this case by Amrish Puri or Gajraj Rao.
In a bold step, Kartik kisses Aman in the mandap in the middle of wedding celebrations, shocking everyone around them.
While we do not know if Gajraj Rao will say “Jaa Aman Jaa, Jee Le Apni Zindagi” or not Aman is seen running towards Kartik replicating the iconic DDLJ train scene.
Directed by Hitesh Kewalya and produced by Aanand L Rai, Bhushan Kumar, Himanshu Sharma, Krishan Kumar, the film is scheduled to release on February 21 this year.
“Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is a beautiful story told in the quintessential Aanand Rai style of filmmaking that will touch your hearts and leave a smile on your face. It is one of the most brilliant films that I have read in a long time and it handles the subject of homosexuality really sensitively. It is a pleasure to collaborate again with the master storyteller of our times. It is an out and out entertaining film that will also make you think and that’s the hallmark of good cinema,” said Ayushmann Khurrana in a statement about the film.
“The success of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan encouraged us to turn it into a franchise which tackles taboo subjects in the most light-hearted manner. With Zyada Saavdhan, we have a great story in hand and who better, but Ayushmann to play the lead since he brings a whole new level of expression to the table. Hope audiences enjoy it as much as the first film,” said producer Aanand L Rai of Colour Yellow Productions.
In the second installment, Bhumi Pednekar will be seen in a special appearance which will of course be different from her role in the first part.
“Bhumi is a part of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan family and we couldn’t imagine making Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan without her. She has a very special appearance in the narrative and we are extremely happy to have her on board,” said Aanand L Rai about roping in Bhumi for the sequel.
The film also stars Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, Jeetendra Kumar, Manurishi Chaddha, Sunita Rajwar, Maanvi Gagroo, Pankhuri Awasthy and Neeraj Singh in pivotal roles.
Jitendra Kumar who became popular with his roles in comedy sketches of The Viral Fever was last seen as Jeetu Bhaiya in web series Kota Factory.
