New Delhi: Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kalank was one of the most-anticipated movies of 2019 and also one of the biggest commercial failures of the year. Boasting of a stellar cast of Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjay Dutt, the film had a glossy packaging but lacked good storytelling and soul.
Naturally, it got rejected at the box office and the actors who starred in it were left disappointed having put their heart and soul into their characters.
Varun Dhawan who played the role of Zafar too learnt a lot from the failure of the film as it helped him press the reset button and he feels he needed that grounding.
“I expected it. I knew it was coming. When the film didn’t work, it made me go to the basics. It made me go back to being who I really was. The failure made me press the reset button in my life. I was also moving too fast during that time; maybe flying too high. I might be putting too much meaning into it, but I needed that grounding. I needed that something to knock me out and put me on the ground. Recently, I met Saif (Ali Khan) and he made a lot of fun of me about this. He said, ‘You can’t be so affected by it, just relax and chill,’ which is a good way to look at it,” Varun Dhawan said in an interview with The Times of India.
The actor has also realised what kind of movies fan like to see him.
“My choice of films is pan India, and there are certain things I have learnt that does not work with the audience, so I will try to avoid those. My pulse is massy. These are the films I can contribute to really well. I get very inspired by kids, by the way they behave and what they like. Currently, the biggest song for me in the world is Baby Shark as my little niece keeps hearing it,” the actor said.
