Bangalore: Chappal Ki Dukaan Aage Hai, an experiential play in Hindi engages the audience like never before with its 3D format and transports them into a fantasy world that transcends boundaries between reality and imagination.

Based on Sahitya Akademy winning author Vinod Kumar Shukla’s book Yasi, Rasa, Ta, and directed by Majmakaar Kamal Pruthi, also known as Kabuliwala, the play has a stroke of serendipity, a generous dose of magic, a glob of imagination, and much more.

Shukla is popular for his magic realism and there’s an unintended taste of it in the show for the audience.

You as the audience of a 3D play might not be able to get a grip of what’s going on initially and feel that you are hallucinating but once you are in, you will be totally involved and left asking for more.

The interesting thing about the play is that the actors are not merely actors but storytellers also. There have been no group rehearsals of the show, no one was aware who the co-actor storytellers are going to be until the premiere day.

All the actor storytellers and audiences are given complete freedom to do what they want to, be themselves and take complete freedom. At the end of it all it is a sublime joy and sheer delight to put this trippy act together not just for the audience but for ourselves as it just felt an extension of self for all the performers.

Since the format allows a lot of creative freedom to the actor-storytellers as well as the audience members, anything can happen anytime during the show and one has to be ready to wisely and creatively react to it. Receptive and enthusiastic audience who were equally clueless of what was happening for most part yet the mutual energies rubbed onto each other and no one wanted Chappal ki Dukaan to shut.

Well, it is casual to hold one’s chappals at the beach in Goa to immerse oneself in the sand and waters but has it ever been seen that the audience is asked to take off their chappals and take place in the performance hall anywhere on the stage wherever they fancy.
