New Delhi: Rishi Kapoor, one of the brightest stars in the galaxy of Indian cinema and son of late legendary actor-producer Raj Kapoor, breathed his last at 8:45 am today (April 30, 2020) in a Mumbai hospital. He was battling leukemia for the past two years.
His almost 50 years journey in filmdom was kickstarted by one of the finest films ever made–Mera Naam Joker, his father’s most ambitious project. The film got him national award for best child actor when he was just 16. He first faced screen at the age of 2 in Raj Kapoor and Nargis-starrer Shree 420 where he’s seen in song Pyaar Hua Ikraar hua for a fraction of seconds along with two other kids.
In his five-decade long career, Rishi Kapoor was seen in not less than 150 films out of which he must have starred as a romantic hero in close to a hundred films.
His films like Bobby, Rafoo Chakkar, Khel Khel Mein, Kabhie Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Karz, Chandni, Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai, Deewana, Damini, are considered his most memorable films as a lead actor. His second innings opened up an entirely new world for him where he never failed to experiment with challenging roles.
Do Dooni Chaar, Agneepath, Chintu Ji, Kapoor & Sons, 102 Not Out, Mulk were among the films where Rishi showcased his unexplored side as an artist and not just a star who was raring to do more such roles in the future. His last film was The Body which was remake of a Spanish film by the same name and starred Emraan Hashmi and Shobhita Dhulipala in lead.
Family statement on Rishi Kapoor’s demise
Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45 am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.
He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.
He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.
In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force.
He would not have it any other way.”
The actor’s cremation will be held in Chandanwadi Crematorium at 4 PM today. His daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni has got special permission to fly from Delhi to Mumbai for her father’s funeral. Rishi’s niece Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, and Alia Bhatt were spotted at the hospital from where his moral remains will be carried to the crematorium. Abhishek Bachchan and industrial Anil Ambani were also spotted at the crematorim where the last rites of the star are in progress. Everyone present was wearing mask.

Rishi Kapoor’s battle with leukemia
Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018. The actor underwent treatment for his disease in US and returned to India last September. In February, he was hospitalised twice, after suffering from an infection and later viral fever.
His industry colleagues are heartbroken over his tragic demise and have expressed their condolences. Due to Covid-19 crisis, many would not be able to attend the actor’s funeral.

Been trying to write something n I can’t put my mind n hands in sync. More like the heart in between is just not able to comprehend this. That laugh, that sense of humour, the honesty and even the bully he was , will be missed. No one like you #RishiKapoor

Rishi Kapoor’s golden tracks
No romantic hero is complete without the soulful songs that touch the hearts of not just one generation. Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho, Hoga Tumse Pyaara Kaun, Parda Hai Parda, Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karenge, Chandni O Meri Chandani..the list is endless. Here’s out favourite Rishi Kapoor songs:
Hoga Tumse Pyaar Kaun (Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai)
Om Shanti Om (Karz)
Parda Hai Parda (Amar Akbar Anthony)
Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho (Bobby)
Ek Main Aur Ek Tu (Khel Khel Mein)
Bachna Ae Haseenon (Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin)
Chehra Hai Ya Chand Khila Hai (Sagar)
Chandani O Meri Chandani (Chandni)
