New Delhi: With Covid situation worsening and almost going out of control, Delhi government on Monday announced curfew in the city-state for a week starting tonight.
Delhi is among the worst-hit cities by the pandemic as daily infections have been soaring by the day and health infrastructure has been found terribly wanting. The number of critical patients have surged requiring ventilator support and oxygen but neither of the two is easily available.
Delhi recorded as many as 25,462 fresh Covid cases on Sunday with positivity rate shooting up to 29.74%. This effectively means that every third person tested for the deadly virus is found positive.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said Delhi is facing an “acute shortage” of oxygen and beds for Covid-19 patients. While sending SOS to the Centre for providing more oxygen, he alleged that the quota of oxygen for the city had been diverted to other states.
The decision to lock the city down came today after Chief Minister Kejriwal met Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal. He announced the curfew and called it a ‘Mini Lockdown’. All essential services such as pharmacy, ration shops and medical supplies would remain operational during the curfew.
The second wave of pandemic has been playing havoc in many major cities such as Mumbai, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Jaipur, Chennai and Hyderabad. Moreover, it has been spreading like wildfire and reached many villages in the interiors of the country where healthcare system is non-existent.
