New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is way behind arch rival and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in popular support but the Gandhi scion seems closing the gap faster.
If likes and retweets on Gandhi’s Twitter handle is any indication of popularity, the Congress leader has crushed Modi in battle for space on the micro-blogging site.
The latest speech of Gandhi in Lok Sabha on February 7 targetting top business tycoon Gautam Adani has won him enough eyeballs if not support. He was speaking on Motion of Thanks to President’s Address but used the opportunity to target Modi for his alleged connection with Adani.
The two video clips of the speech posted on Gandhi’s Twitter handle have secured 57.3 thousand and 39.8 thousand likes till 8:15 PM today.
As compared to this, two video clips of Modi’s speech in Lok Sabha on his Twitter handle managed to get only 5.6 thousand and 6.6 thousand likes respectively till 8:20 PM today.
It may be noted that while Narendra Modi has 86.4 million followers on Twitter, Rahul has a total of 22.7 million followers.
Prime Minister Modi will seek third term in office early next year when General Elections are due. Several surveys have suggested that Modi’s BJP would win simple majority in Lok Sabha on its own and Congress Party stays nowhere in the race even as its tally is expected to improve on lower base.
The recent Bharat Jodo yatra is believed to have given some thrust to Rahul Gandhi’s political mileage but whether it will translate into votes only time will tell. Of course, one year is too long a time in politics and table may turn either side on barely a few issues such as price rise and matters of national interest.
