ECI begins process for electing new VP after Dhankhar exit

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has commenced the process for electing new Vice President of India after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation last Monday.

As the dust settles around the controversial exit of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President, Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday has set the ball rolling for election for the key Constitutional post.

The development has come just a day after Home Ministry notified the resignation of Dhankhar.

In a unusual move, Dhankhar resigned from his post on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament citing health issues.

The political corridors are however abuzz that Dhankhar resigned from the key post following a direction from the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi”s cryptic message on “X” suggests all was not well with the government and Dhankhar.

“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” wrote PM.

PM Modi who is otherwise known for his oratory, lengthy speeches and loquacious talks was conspicuously brief in his parting message for Dhankhar.

Election for new VP kicks off

Meanwhile, The Election Commission of India (ECI) has commenced the process for electing new Vice President of India.

“….the Election Commission of India has already started the preparations relating to the Vice-Presidential Elections, 2025. On completion of the
preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule to the office of the Vice-President of India will follow as soon as possible,” an ECI release said.
