New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the extension of the existing North-South corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) from GIFT City to Shahpur, adding 3.33 km to the network with three elevated stations.
The project, estimated to cost ₹1,067.35 crore, is slated for completion in about four years. The extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily in 2029, rising to 58,059 by 2041.
Connectivity boost for Ahmedabad–GIFT corridor
The extension is expected to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, providing a boost to major multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial establishments located along the route.
It is also aimed at easing daily commutes for those travelling between the two hubs for business, employment and education, improving overall network integration and passenger convenience.
₹1,067-crore project to add 3 stations, create jobs
The project is estimated to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and about 250 jobs in operations and maintenance after completion, apart from indirect employment opportunities.
GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and the Gujarat government, will implement the project.
At present, the 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase I — connecting APMC to Motera Stadium (North-South corridor) and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam (East-West corridor) — and Phase II — linking Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City — are operational, with a total of 53 stations.
Phase I has been functional since September 2022 and Phase II since January 2026. The system currently records an average daily ridership of about 1.6 lakh passengers.
