More than a decade after Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan-starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa made way into viewers’ heart with its unique concept and brilliant performances, its sequel has been announced with an all-new cast. Cinema lovers would be able to watch the movie in theatres July 31, 2020 onwards, which extends the wait to another year.
T-Series’ head honcho Bhushan Kumar announced the return of psychological thriller Bhool Bhulaiyya with a tweet.
“Finally after a long wait, excited to officially announce the haunting comedy #BhoolBhulaiyaa2 with a stellar team! This project has been in the works for a while and I’m really looking forward to it. In cinemas on 31st July, 2020. More details soon…,” he tweeted.
The original Bhool Bhulaiyya was directed by Priyadarshan and released in 2007. The fact that it was a psychological thriller was firmly kept under wraps, and viewers initially thought it was a horror film. Its lead actress Vidya Balan’s character was said to be possessed by a ghost Manjulika. Watching Vidya Balan’s scary avatar in the song Aami Je Tomar in the cinema halls was not for the faint hearted.
However, as the film moved towards the end, it is revealed that Vidya Balan’s character had a psychological disorder and there was no ghosts whatsover possessing the haveli or a human. Akshay Kumar played the role of ghostbuster in the original movie.
Cut to circa 2019, the movie returns with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety actor Kartik Aryan playing the ghostbuster and stepping into the shoes of Akshay Kumar. The female lead of the film is yet to be announced.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa was an official remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu.
Apart from Vidya Balan and Akshay Kumar, the film also starred Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav and Vikram Gokhale.
