Aadhaar, passport, voter ID to be combined? Amit Shah proposes one card for all utilities

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, while talking about digital census, brought forward the idea of having a multi-purpose card that combines all the utilities such as Aadhaar, passport, bank accounts, driving license and voter card.

“Why can’t we have just one card for all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving licence, voter card. There should be a system that all data should be put together in a single card. This is a potential. That is why digital census is very important,” he was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report by PTI.

The home minister said Census 2021 will be digitised and conducted via a mobile app and the data could be used for future planning, development initiatives and welfare schemes. The Census 2021 data will cost Rs 12,000 crore, the highest amount ever.

“Census data will be collected through a mobile app. This is for the first time that the mobile app will be used for the census exercise. India will be moving from the pen and paper census to digital data, which will be a big revolution in the country’s census exercise,” he said.

Shah said the 2011 Census data was utilised by Modi govt for many as many as 22 welfare schemes including ‘Ujjwala’ that provided free LPG connection to poor families. He also stated how the programme of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao helped improve Haryana’s sex ratio.

No comprehensive planning by previous govts’

The home minister also said that no comprehensive planning was done by previous governments and they used to introduce welfare schemes on a piecemeal basis.

“The whole approach was changed when Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014. The approach has been changed completely, the thinking has been changed. Goals have been set to completely eradicate the problems,” he said.

Shah was speaking while laying the foundation stone of a new building of the Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner in the national capital.
