New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly will soon be back to Indian cricket, this time as a President of Indian cricket board (BCCI). The cricketer has been chosen for the prestigious post after much deliberations in a meeting organised by the top board officials of BCCI on Sunday evening.
Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah will file his nomination for the post of Secretary, while Anurag Thakur’s brother Arun Singh Thakur will most likely be Treasurer.
The elections will unlikely be held on October 23, on the day of Annual Genreral Meeting (AGM) of the BCCI.
Earlier, Brijesh Patel was expected to land the top position at BCCI, however the tide turned in Ganguly’s favour at the last moment. He will now take over as Chairman of IPL Governing Council.
“My first priority will be to look after first-class cricketers. I had requested the CoA and they have not listened. Ranji Trophy cricket will be the focus. To take care of cricketers’ financial interest,” he was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, after his name was finalised in a BCCI informal meeting.
The cricketer hopes to improve the image of Indian cricket globally.
“I am happy with the appointment because this is the time when BCCI’s image has got hampered and it’s a great opportunity for me to do something. Whether you are elected unopposed or otherwise, it’s a big responsibility because it is the biggest organization in the world of cricket. India is a powerhouse. It will be a challenge,” he said.
Cricket fans across the nation are excited about Sourav Ganguly’s return with a bang and have been celebrating on social media ever since. Congratulatory messages from all quarters are pouring in for the cricketer.
“My all-time favorite Cricketer #SouravGanguly who reshaped the Indian cricket team and helped it emerge as a fierceful bunch of sportsmen, hungry for victory has become President of BCCI. Congratulations @SGanguly99,” wrote a Twitter user.
