New Delhi: As the JNU stir continues, chorus for removal of university Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has been growing.
After BJP stalwart and former Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Murli Manohar Joshi called for removing VC, senior CPI leader and Rajya Sabha Member Binoy Viswam has written to Centre for sacking the controversial university boss.
In a letter to HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the veteran Left leader has said that violence in JNU campus highlights incompetency of the university administration led by the Vice-Chancellor.
“The VC’s abetment of outside elements to enter the campus hostels and attack students, teachers and staff calls for his immediate removal,” Viswam has said in the letter.
“His conduct since the start of his term has been directly against the ethos of the university and his inability to perform his duties cannot be further ignored,” the CPI leader noted.
While JNU students have been up in arms against the government over fee hike and launched agitations, attack by masked mob armed with sticks and rods last week triggered fresh protests. The attack on university staff and students has been condemned by one and all.
Many of the attackers are alleged to be from BJP’s student wing ABVP.
Film actress Deepika Padukone visited the campus this week to show her solidarity with the students injured in the attack.
Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh who had been severely injured in the attack gave call on Thursday to march to Rashtrapati Bhawan intensifying the protests. As police stopped the march, a scuffle broke out and many students got injured in police action.
“As the most pressing need of the hour, I urge you to remove Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar from the post of Vice Chancellor and include JNUSU and JNUTA in discussions on the future of Jawaharlal Nehru University,” Viswam has written to HRD Minister.
Top Lead India (TLI) has reviewed the letter sent by Viswam on January 9.
On its part, government has so far maintained that removing V-C was not a solution to the problem and has appealed students to stop protests. It has advised JNU V-C Kumar to increase communication with students, take the faculty into confidence and facilitate the semester registration process.
Students of many premier colleges have expressed solidarity with their fellows in the JNU.
