New Delhi: Amid fear of lower-than-expected production and elevated food inflation, the government on Thursday imposed 20% export duty on rice with effect from September 9, 2022.
“This notification shall come into force on the 09th of September, 2022,” said a Custom notification issued on Thursday.
As per the notification issued today, a 20% export duty would be levied on rice in the husk (paddy or rough), husked (brown) rice and semi-milled or wholly-milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed (other than parboiled rice and basmati rice).
The move has come weeks after government restricting export of wheat flour in the wake of rising prices. Citing food security concerns for India and its neighbours and other vulnerable countries, the government had in May this year banned export of wheat.
The decisions were taken in the wake of Russia-Ukraine war which sent wheat prices soaring in the global markets.
The conflict led to the global wheat supply chain disruptions increasing demand of Indian wheat. As a result, the price of wheat in the domestic market also showed an increase necessitating export curbs.
