New Delhi: As 2019 draws to a close, Twitter India has come up with a year-end compliation #ThisHappened that sums up the most talked about tweets, hashtags and handles of the year. 2019 witnessed a mix of joyous and tragic events that made a significant impact on the lives of millions.
#loksabhaelections2019 was the top trending topic while ISRO’s moon mission made #chandrayaan2 the second most popular talking point on Twitter. Pulwama terror attack sent shockwaves across the country and social media was flooded with reactions from all quarters.
Methodology of the report is on the basis of number of unique authors discussing on Twitter from Jan 1 to Nov 15, 2019.
Here are some of the most interesting and talked about topics that emerged on Twitter.
1. #loksabhaelections2019: When India, world’s largest democracy, went to polls this year, and Narendra Modi secured a spectacular win, Indians took to Twitter to exchange their thoughts which resulted in #loksabhaelections2019 claiming the top slot in the list of most tweeted about Hashtags.
2. #chandrayaan2: ISRO’s ground-breaking mission to land the world’s first robotic rover on the moon’s south pole was followed closely, not only by millions of Indians but people all across the world. A Tweet from NASA (@NASA) commending ISRO became one of the top ten most Retweeted Tweets this year by Indians on the service.
3. #cwc19: There was a strong buzz around the hashtag before and after the grand event as cricket fans across the globe talked about Cricket World Cup 2019. In India, cricket is considered a religion and despite the country losing to New Zealand in the semi-finals, Indian cricket fans owned Twitter, tweeting about winning moments, shocking upsets, classic catches, and the unforgettables memes that made #cwc19 the third most tweeted about hashtag this year.
4. #pulwama: The shocking news of the death of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in one of the most deadliest terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir, on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama district. It had far-reaching implications as the relationship between India and Pakistan hit an all-time low.
5. #article370: Jammu & Kashmir remained in news for a variety of reasons this year including removing Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gave special status to Jammu & Kashmir in August by the Minister of Home Affairs which created nothing short of a storm on Twitter.
6. #bigil: Like every year, the Tamil and Telugu entertainment industries dominated entertainment conversations on Twitter. Fans of superstar Vijay (@actorvijay) used the service to discuss and celebrate every update about the much-awaited Diwali blocker buster #bigil.
7. #diwali: Indians love to celebrate their festivals with a lot of enthusiasm and post colouful pictures on social media. This year was no exception as the five days of Diwali celebrations also lit up people’s timelines.
8. #avengersendgame: Like much of the world, Indians took to Twitter to discuss fan-theories and what to expect in the anticipated finale of the franchise, making #avengersendgame one of the most tweeted about hashtags this year.
9. #ayodhyaverdict: The Ayodhya dispute has been a political, historical, and socio-religious milestone in India. As the final judgement in the Ayodhya dispute was declared by the Supreme Court of India, people took to social media to share their reactions.
10. #eidmubarak: Audiences on Twitter celebrate every festival with equal cheer and joy. The tenth most tweeted about hashtag this year was the festival of Eid, as people tweeted and wished each other prosperity and goodwill.
