Foreign Covid aid including 3 lakh Remdesivir vials dispatched to states, says Centre

Central government has delivered and dispatched 6,738 oxygen concentrators, 3856 oxygen cylinders and 4,668 ventilators/BiPAP/CPAP to states as on May 10.

New Delhi: Claiming that foreign aid was being swiftly transported to states, the Centre on Monday said that it had dispatched oxygen concentrators, cylinders and ventilators to states helping them to scale up health infrastructure.

An official press release said that central government had delivered and dispatched 6,738 oxygen concentrators, 3856 oxygen cylinders and 4,668 ventilators/BiPAP/CPAP to states as on May 10.

As many as 3 lakh Remdesivir vials received as part of the global aid to fight Covid have been dispatched to various states. The Centre has also moved 16 oxygen generation plants to various locations.

“The Union Government is ensuring that the global aid is being expeditiously delivered to States and UTs through fast custom clearances, and use of air and road,” a health Ministry statement said.

A surge in Covid cases since mid-March has put immense pressure on existing hospital infrastructure in the country. With massive demand and supply mismatch, critical patients in many cases could not get oxygen beds, ICU and Remdesivir injections resulting in record deaths over the last few weeks.

The daily count of new Coronavius cases dipped below 4 lakh on Sunday. India reported 3,66,161 new Covid-19 cases and 3,754 deaths in the past 24 hours.

As per official data, 10 states have reported 73.91% of the new cases in last 24 hours. Worst-affected Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 48,401. It is followed by Karnataka with 47,930 cases while Kerala’s total daily new case count stood at 35,801.

Various states governments such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have imposed lockdowns to contain the spread of killer virus. People are being allow to come out of their homes only in case of essential services.

The national mortality rate has been falling and currently stands at 1.09%. As in cases of new cases, 10 states account for bulk (72.86%) of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (572) followed by Karnataka with 490 daily deaths.

Three States/UTs of Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have not reported any COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours.
