Himanta Biswa Sarma is new Assam Chief Minister

After taking the oath, Sarma promised to take Assam to greater heights of prosperity and making it as among the leading states of the country.

Guwahati: Face of ruling BJP’s face in north-eastern India, Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath on Monday as 15th Chief Minister of Assam.

He held key portfolios of Health and Finance in the previous government, Sarma succeeds his outgoing boss Sarbananda Sonowal.

“With blessings & grace of people of Assam, I took over as Chief Minister of the state today. Taking Assam to greater heights of prosperity and making it as among the leading states, pursuing the ideals and values of Adarniya Pradhan Mantri Sri @narendramodi, is our pledge,” Sarma tweeted.

Sarma was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Assam by Governor Jagdish Mukhi this afternoon. Along with Sarma, 13 members of his cabinet also took the oath.

BJP national President JP Nadda, other senior leaders of the party and also opposition members attended the swearing in ceremony in Guwahati.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Himanta Biswa Sarma and other Ministers on taking oath in Assam.

“Congratulations to @himantabiswa Ji and the other Ministers who took oath today. I am confident this team will add momentum to the development journey of Assam and fulfill aspirations of the people.” Modi said in a Twitter message.

At the same time, he also praised the works of outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The Prime Minister tweeted, “My valued colleague @sarbanandsonwal Ji was at the helm of a pro-people and pro-development administration over the last five years. His contribution towards Assam’s progress and strengthening the party in the state is immense.”

Though Sonowal could not repeat the term as CM, at least seven of his ministers have retained their positions in the new government.
