Government cancels Class XII CBSE board exams, students cheer the decision

New Delhi: With India still in the grip of Covid-19 pandemic and public health experts predicting a third wave of the deadly virus infection, the government has cancelled the Board examinations for Class XII.

Following a review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class XII students as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.

The government move is on expected lines as lakhs of students wanted the exams to be cancelled due to the looming health crisis. Opposition parties such as Congress, SP, AAP and DMK had also suggested the government to cancel the exams this year.

The score of the Class XII exam is crucial for admission to colleges and various vocational institutions across the country.

The government has stated that the decision to cancel the CBSE Class XII exams had been has been taken in the interest of students. Further, COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar and the issue of Board Exams has been causing immense anxiety among students, parents and teachers.

An official press release said that the decision was necessitated given the uncertain conditions due to COVID and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders.

While the number of new Corona virus infections has been coming down in the country and some states are managing the situation through effective micro-containment, some states have still opted for a lockdown.
Students, parents and teachers remain worried about the health of the students in such a situation.

“PM said that students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation,” the PIB release said.

The government had earlier cancelled the Class X board exams and said that it will take a call on Class XII later after consulting all concerned and prevailing health situations in the country.

“The Prime Minister stressed that the health and safety of our students is of utmost importance and there would be no compromise on this aspect. He said that in today’s time, such exams cannot be the reason to put our youth at risk,” said the official statement.
