On 18th June, 1999, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s iconic film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, one of the rare films where Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were paired together, hit the theatres. As Sameer and Nandini, they still live in the hearts of their fans as the film depicted their passionate romance interrupted by a tragic twist of life.

As the film’s story moves forward with its brilliant storytelling, soulful songs, artistic sets, and heartwarming performances, the viewers could not help but stay glued to its each and every twist.

No wonder the film became a massive commercial success. If Bhansali’s Khamoshi was like a serene, soft breeze of love that went beyond words, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a bold declaration of rebellious young love thwarted by the rules laid by the society.

Salman, Aishwarya and Ajay Devgn got into the skin of their characters with aplomb and left their real life personas far behind as they entered the sets. Sameer, Nandini and Vanraj’s idea of love evolve over the course of the film as they discover the true nature of it.

Like the myriad colours of love that the film depicted, its songs too displayed a wide range from soft Chaand Chupa Badal Mein, peppy Dholi Taaro and Kai Po Che, to foot-tapping number Nimbooda. Tadap Tadap Ke, title track Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Jhoka Hawa Ka shattered one’s heart into million pieces.

While love triangles are not uncommon in Bollywood, this one delved into all the emotions associated with early stages of love, separation and mature love.

The film bagged several awards, including Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Director.
